The Bronx neighborhood known as Arthur Avenue is one of New York's last enclaves of small, family-run food shops, most of which have been in business for over 100 years.
The Belmont section of the Bronx, also known as Little Italy or simply “Arthur Avenue,” is one of New York's last enclaves of truly family-run food shops.

Stop At: Arthur Avenue Retail Market, 2344 Arthur Ave, New York City, NY 10458-8104

On this epic food tour, we visit nearly a dozen Italian food shops, most of which are third generation owned. We’ll start our food adventure at the famous Arthur Avenue Retail Market, where we’ll explore the many stalls inside and make a special stop to see what foods have just arrived from Italy.
Next, we’ll head next door to a pork shop where the entire ceiling is covered with their homemade sausages. Then, our friend Diego will give us samples of his imported and homemade cheeses before we move onto a local bakery for a taste of their singular loaves. We’ll stop by a working fish market for a freshly shucked oyster, watch fresh pasta being made, and visit a neighborhood deli for a sample of their hand-pulled mozzarella. Finally, we’ll find out where NYC chefs get their Italian food supplies and why.

The tour has been created and is often led by Danielle Oteri and her husband Christian Galliani. Danielle’s great grandfather, Albino Oteri, settled in the area and opened a fish market at 2374 Arthur Avenue. The store later became a butcher shop where the Academy Award-winning movie “Marty” was filmed. Christian is a first-generation Italian-American whose culinary tradition hails from Northern Italy. He’s also a sommelier who believes firmly in the Italian wine pairing principle of what grows together, goes together.
